Tell us about your child’s health
Tell us about premature birth, recent illness, fever, allergies, hospital admissions and previous procedures. Also discuss any bleeding problems in your child or family.
Food and medication
Follow only the feeding instructions provided by the practice. Do not apply a general fasting rule found online.
Never stop medication yourself and do not give pain relief before the appointment unless the doctor explicitly advises it.
What should you bring?
A parent or legal guardian must understand the explanation and be able to give consent. Write down any questions beforehand.
- The child’s Kids-ID, ISI+ card or other identification details
- An up-to-date medication list and information about vitamin K
- Extra nappies, wipes, feed, a dummy and a familiar comfort item
- The appointment confirmation and any previous medical reports
On the day
Dress your child comfortably and arrive on time. Do not apply cream, oil or powder to the procedure area unless this was agreed in advance.
The doctor will assess your child first. The procedure is performed only when medically appropriate.
When might postponement be necessary?
Fever, an active illness, an unclear bleeding history, insufficient information about vitamin K or certain anatomical findings may be reasons not to proceed.
In that case, the doctor may decide to postpone the procedure or refer your child for further assessment.
